The Tannery Museum

A historic gem in the centre of Simrishamn

The building that houses the Tannery Museum was built in the late 17th or early 18th century and is one of the oldest secular buildings in Simrishamn. From the 1840s to the 1990s, there was a tannery here, which was then called Den Strömska Garvaregården. Other craftsmen have also been owners of this house and in the 1730s there was a shoemaker's shop here.

As early as 1926, this house was turned into a museum in order to preserve and pass on the history of tanning to the future. One of the rooms has been preserved in almost its original state. It contains many tannery tools and the journeyman's corner with a bed and some journeyman's forgotten personal belongings such as a lice comb and a ceremonial hat.

There are also pictures of the Ehrnberg & Sons Leather Factory, which was located in the neighbouring neighbourhood and was the dominant industry in the area until 1975. Ehrnberg's exported leather all over the world and employed over 600 people at its peak.
